Chapter 6

Six months later

Elizabeth walked around her gardens with her cutting shears, looking for flowers that would be good for the bouquets she wanted to arrange. She did this weekly and enjoyed using the flowers that grew in her gardens to beautify her home.

She bent and clipped a half-opened red rose and handed it to her maid, Molly. She smiled to herself as she remembered that first day Molly had come to work for them. Elizabeth had been ready to insist to Thomas that Molly be let go, but she turned out to be a godsend instead. She had a way of insisting that Elizabeth do certain things, but Molly could also tell when Elizabeth had reached her limit and knew when to let her have the time she needed to heal.

After Thomas had taken her to the orphanage and insisted she hold little Violet, things had begun to improve. Elizabeth started to have better days and soon no longer wished she could sleep all the time. With Thomas’ encouragement, and Molly’s, she started to take over the running of the household and began accepting visitors.

A few months later, she attended her first party, with Thomas at her side. Now, she felt as happy as she could feel, considering the darkness she had worked to crawl out of.

Thomas had been wonderful and the feelings she had for him before her pregnancy had grown into a strong enduring love. She had allowed him to help her grieve and this, in return, had helped him. She realized that he also had to work through his own thoughts and sadness about Mary’s death.

“Elizabeth,” Thomas called to her and she turned to see her handsome husband striding towards her. When he reached her, she kissed him on his cheek.

“I have something to talk to you about,” he told her, excitement in his eyes. “Shall we sit on the bench over there?” he gestured towards an iron bench that sat under a large shade tree.

When they were both sitting, he started to talk.

“I have an idea and I would like to see how you feel about it. I’ve talked to my lawyer about this and some other business men, including our butler, Arthur, making sure it is something that we can do, and now I can tell you.”

“What is it, Thomas?” Elizabeth asked, hoping that the news wasn’t going to be that Thomas was opening up another office in a nearby city. If he did that, he would have to travel more and she didn’t want him gone more than he already was.

“We have been blessed with a large house and are financially secure, thanks to my father. I think we should turn our home into a girls’ home.”

“What...?” Elizabeth was shocked. It was the last thing she expected him to say.

“Let me finish, and then you can tell me what you think, okay?”

Elizabeth nodded for him to continue, her mind already swirling. A girls’ home?

“We could convert our home into a home for girls that need a place to grow up.
